The "Multiply by 7" Myth

For decades, the popular wisdom has been that one dog year equals seven human years. However, veterinary science has long proven this rule is wildly inaccurate. Dogs and cats mature much faster in their first two years of life than humans do, but their aging process slows down afterward.

By the end of their first year, a dog or cat is biologically closer to a 15-year-old human teenager. By age two, they are physically equivalent to a 24-year-old adult.

Why Breed Size Matters for Dogs

Unlike cats, which are generally all a similar size, dogs have an immense variation in body mass across breeds. A Chihuahua can weigh 4 pounds, while an English Mastiff can weigh 200 pounds.

In the canine world, larger bodies age faster and have shorter lifespans. This is why our calculator asks for the breed size.

• Small Dogs: Age slower after the second year, adding roughly 4 human years for every calendar year.
• Medium Dogs: Add roughly 5 human years for every calendar year.
• Large/Giant Dogs: Age rapidly, adding up to 6 or 7 human years for every calendar year after age two.

Understanding Feline Aging

Cats follow a more predictable aging curve because of their uniform size. Like dogs, they reach the equivalent of 24 human years by the time they are 2 calendar years old. From that point on, they generally age at a rate of 4 human years for every calendar year.

This means a 10-year-old cat is roughly 56 in human terms, firmly entering their "senior" years where specialized veterinary checkups and dietary changes are highly recommended.
